Movie Review : Achanuranghatha Veedu

Director Lal Jose has surprised everyone by taking a "U" turn with ‘Achanuranghatha Veedu’. It is very unexpected of a commercial director like him to make this kind of realistic film and that also after the success of ‘Chandupottu’. This is indeed a wake-up call for the society. The director’s gesture is commendable, as everybody in the film industry is vying to have a piece of him.

Samuel (Salim Kumar) shoulders the responsibility of bringing up his three daughters after the untimely death of his wife. His eldest daughter Treesa (Suja Karthika) marries a driver Johnnykutty (Harisree Asokan), who is also an alcoholic and it is his second daughter Sherly (Samvritha) who does all the household work. So, his youngest daughter Lisamma (Muktha), a PUC student is his only hope and he wants her to become a doctor.

But Lisamma goes missing one fateful day, shuttering Samuel’s heart and dreams. Police later traces her after falling prey to sex-racket and enough of exploit being done. Rude less legal trials, sensationalizing of the issue by the media and the treatment of the society on the victim and her family form the rest of the film.

Salim Kumar’s performance in the film is wonderful. In fact, he has made all the difference to the film. People expect something ridiculous from him but he has bowled everyone over by his splendid performance. It’s indeed a wise move to make him the protagonist. Murali has delivered some good dialogues and Pritviraj also has done his part well but Indrajith and Madhu Warrier are complete waste. Suja Karthika, Samvrutha and Muktha who play Usha’s daughter are all impressive. Bright future awaits 14-year-old Muktha.

The technical aspect of the film is also fine. Babu Janardhanan’s screenplay is all about the daily happenings in life and this has gone down very well. Manoj Pilla’s camera work is commendable. Alex Paul and Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma are also impressive with the music and lyrics. Director Lal Jose has once again succeeded in doing a good film sans commercial elements. He deserves a big round of applause.
