Movie Review : Ghajini

Producer: Salem Chandrasekhar
Director: A.R.Murugadass
Cast: Surya, Asin, Nayantara, Riaz Khan, Pradeep Rawat
Music: Harris Jayaraj

Hats off to director A.R.Murugadoss and actor Surya for making such a good thriller film. The content of the film has in deed revolutionized the Tamil film. Murugadoss’ screenplay is very liberal but well written with balanced commercial elements. The film is very much influenced by Christopher Nolan classic ‘Memento’. But the director has successfully Indianized it. The difficult terms like short-term memory loss is beautifully narrated by giving flashbacks to make it understandable to everyone. Harris Jayaraj’s music is also making waves in the market.

Chitra (Nayantara), a medical student is keen to study Sanjay’s problem but the professors discouraged her, as he has a police case. Sanjay can’t remember things beyond 15 minutes. He goes on a killing spree as he forgets things too soon. A police officer (Riyaz Khan) always follows Sanjay and unravels the happenings in his life with the help of his diary. But he is also killed in an accident.

The diary reveals that Sanjay is a business tycoon and chairman of ‘Air Voice Mobile’ company. He falls in love with a struggling model Kalpana (Asin), who works for the cause of the poor and handicapped. Her good qualities attracted the business tycoon. But she invites the wrath of a gang who are supplying girls to Mumbai racketeers by exposing the racket.

Then Lakshman (Pradeep Rawat) and gang kill Kalpana and hit Sanjay on the head after trying to save her. So, he loses his memory. Now, Sanjay is all out to kill Lakshman and his gang. He tattoos all the information on his body and takes photos with his Polaroid camera to make out his enemies and friends.

Actor Surya’s wonderful performance is the highlight of the film. He carries off the character beautifully with restraint anger and emotions. Heroine Asin is also splendid in the film. Her character as Kalpana is wonderful, as she is capable of doing romantic and emotional scenes equally well. The chemistry between the lead pair is touching in the first half of the film.

On the other hand, Nayantara has nothing much to do in the film, as her character is not well curved. And it is hard to understand, as to why the director has created a double role for Pradeep Rawat. The climax scene in the water is too lengthy, though it is well executed. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are soothing. R.D.Rajasekhar’s camera work is good and Anthony’s editing is also impressive. On the whole, this action movie is full of dark and intense moments. It is entertaining and stylishly made.
